Bloomberg Vows To Pressure Albany On Gay Marriage

By: NY1 News

Days after Senator Charles Schumer announced he now supports same-sex marriage, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he will put the pressure on Albany to pass a law allowing gay marriage in New York State.

The mayor said at a benefit dinner for the LGBT Community Center last night that the tide is turning and support for gay marriage in the state is mounting.

Bloomberg said he would be happy to testify in Albany once the state Legislature introduces a bill allowing gay marriage.

"Make no mistake, the time will come, I think in the nearer term than further out, and we will pass this bill," said Bloomberg.

The Republican-led State Senate has for years blocked legislation allowing gay marriage.

Democrats, now in control of the State Senate, have so far not been able to round up enough votes to pass the measure.
